The Seven Deadly Elements of a Drop-Dead Gorgeous Elevator Pitch ...

An elevator pitch, elevator speech or elevator statement is a short sales pitch; that is, a summary used to quickly and simply define a process, product, service, organization, or event and its value proposition.

The name reflects the idea that it should be possible to deliver the summary in the time span of an elevator ride, or approximately thirty seconds to two minutes. Its origin is widely credited to Ilene Rosenzweig and Michael Caruso (while he was editor for Vanity Fair). A pitch in a real elevator was the climax to the 1988 film Working Girl and this may have influenced the concept.

An elevator pitch is a short, 30-60 second well-crafted business pitch telling someone who you are and why they should want to hire you. It's called the elevator pitch because it's meant to represent the amount of time you'd have if you were stuck in an elevator with someone riding from the bottom of the building to the top. A solid elevator pitch will allow you to distill down to the most pure form exactly who you are and what you offer, and that focus can help to set you apart from all the other candidates who are vying for the same job. A variety of people, including entrepreneurs, producers, project managers, salespeople, evangelists, and policy-makers, commonly rehearse and use elevator pitches to get their points across quickly.
